Tourist stop between Boston and Poconos?

I'll be traveling by car to the Poconos area in early September. My exact route isn't decided yet. What are suggestions for good places to stop about half way?
Historical homes, living museums, boat cruises or similar such attractions would be nice; places with areas for outdoor relaxation but also indoors activities in case the weather is bad.
Thanks in advance.
